So, you’ve found that perfect apartment! Now it’s time to pack up and move.
Here are a few things to think about before you hire a mover or rental truck:
- Plan ahead! Start a notebook with the information you need to keep on schedule and ensure an easy move. Include information like dates to turn off and turn on utilities, notify the post office and significant others of the change in address,
and arrange to sell, donates, or give away unneeded stuff. And don’t forget the most important part – reserve a truck or movers, ask friends, family, or other strong backs to reserve moving day to help you (this part can be tricky).
- Do you have large pieces of furniture? Will you be able to move them yourself or will you need to ask friends for help? Plan far ahead for that rental truck, dolly, and/or movers. During peak moving times (September 1st in Boston), you may be out of luck on moving day.
- If you have a tricky place to move out of (i.e. 3rd floor walk up), be sure to create a “plan-of-action.” How many flights of stairs do you have to climb? Do you have an elevator? Be sure to figure out HOW you plan on maneuvering that 6 foot couch down 3 flights of stairs.
- Create a floor plan for you new place before you get there. Do some space planning to make sure that you have a spot for everything. If you’re sharing an apartment, check with your roommate about what they have room for or need. Two sectional sofas will not fit!
- Purge! Purge! Purge! Get real and move only what you need, use, and love. There is no need to spend more and waste more time moving stuff you don’t need. Donate clothing, linens, kitchen stuff, and furniture to your favorite charities. You can also give them away on Freecycle, or sell them on Craigslist.
- Make sure you have enough boxes in an assortment of sizes. Don’t use boxes that are so big that you can’t move them when full. To find free boxes, check out your local liquor store, Costco or BJ’s, or even friends and neighbors. Use see-through Rubbermaid or Sterilite containers for things that will be stored.
- Label all your boxes. This will make unpacking a whole lot easier.
- Have a fun and happy moving day and reward yourself when the move in complete!
